This month, we’d like to focus on our younger patients. Scheduling your first gynecologic exam can be intimidating; however, it’s an important part of your overall health. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about gynecologic and pelvic exams.
When should I have my first gynecologic exam?
We recommend having your initial exam by age 18. If you are under 18, but are sexually active or have abnormal bleeding or pain, we advise having a gynecologic exam that includes a pelvic exam, which is an internal examination of your reproductive organs.
What will happen at my first gynecologic visit?
Your first visit will include discussing your health history and lifestyle with your physician – including eating and exercise habits, health history, menstrual cycle, sexual activity, and other personal topics. While the conversation may be awkward or uncomfortable, it’s important to be honest.
The physician will conduct an overall physical exam, including blood pressure, height, and weight. Even if you’re not sexually active, the physician may examine the exterior of your genitals.
What if I’m sexually active?
If you are sexually active, the physician will want to discuss birth control, test for STDs, and conduct a pelvic exam.
Why are gynecologic exams important?
Annual exams are important to create a baseline, so your physician will be able to compare results from the previous year and determine if changes have occurred.
