Gynecologic cancers, such as ovarian and cervical cancer, affect about one in 20 women and can be caused by a variety of factors. For example, cervical cancer can be caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Ovarian cancer tends to occur more frequently in women who have a family member with this type of cancer. Symptoms for gynecologic cancers also vary.
Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent gynecologic cancer, you can take steps to reduce your risk. The most important step is to have a gynecologic examination and PAP test every year. This will not only allow the doctor to conduct a physical and visual examination, but also provide the opportunity to discuss any changes or symptoms you may be experiencing. As with most diseases, early detection is key with gynecologic cancers.
Other Ways to Reduce Your Risk
- Know your family history and discuss it with your doctor
- Lead a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and a balanced diet
- Quit smoking (or don’t start in the first place)
- Use condoms to reduce the risk of contracting STDs
- Have a tubal ligation once you are finished having children
