Quit Smoking to Improve Your Health

The American Lung Association calls cigarette smoking “the number one cause of preventable disease and death worldwide.” Diseases that stem from smoking cause nearly 400,000 deaths per year in the United States alone.

Smoking cigarettes does not only affect your lungs. In fact, it affects nearly every organ in your body. Smoking can cause a number of health issues, including heart disease, stroke, cancers, and other diseases. It can also play a role in infertility in both men and women, and increase a pregnant woman’s chances of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and low birth weight.

On May 31, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) will celebrate “World No Tobacco Day” and are encouraging countries around the world to raise the tax on tobacco. Their goal is to make every day a no tobacco day. Visit the WHO website to learn more about their tobacco free initiative.

If you are currently a smoker who is pregnant or trying to get pregnant, contact your Capital Women’s Care provider to discuss a healthier, tobacco-free lifestyle and pregnancy.
