About Lilja Stefansson, MD

Lilja Stefansson, MD, MS, FACOG (she/her) is a board-certified Obstetrician Gynecologist. She has a passion for partnering with her patients to provide reproductive health care that meets their health needs from adolescence to post-menopause. Dr. Stefansson has particular interests in contraception and complex family planning, the management of abnormal uterine bleeding, adolescent gynecology, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, fibroid management, hysteroscopy, laparoscopic surgery and general obstetric care. She has an extensive background in providing care to patients who have experienced trauma and works to make the gynecologic visit a safe, comfortable experience for her patients.

Dr. Stefansson is a first generation American from Iceland and grew up in Macon, GA. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University. Following this, she completed a Master of Science degree in Physiology at Georgetown University. She then returned to Georgia where she received her medical degree from The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta State University in 2010. While there, she was selected to be an NIH research fellow. In medical school, she was drawn to Obstetrics and Gynecology, and completed her residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. She enjoyed learning about all aspects of reproductive health care, but particularly, she loved providing patients the access to control their reproductive lives. She completed a Fellowship in Complex Family Planning in 2016 from the University of Chicago. During her fellowship, she received a Master of Science for Clinical Professionals degree and focused on increasing access to contraception. She then moved to Boston to practice as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist with Atrius Health, where she was the Director of Family Planning for the large multi-specialty organization.

She is excited to relocate to Maryland to be closer to family. She is passionate about health advocacy and is excited to practice medicine where major health policy decisions are made. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, three children and two Havanese dogs. She finds peace outside in the garden and amongst her bird feeders; add in a seafood boil, pickin’ crab and great weather, and she is in bliss.
