He participated in a rotating medicine internship at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore and received his residency training in gynecology and obstetrics, along with a one-year gyn oncology fellowship, at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. After completing his specialty training in 1977, he moved back to Maryland and has lived and practiced in Howard County since. In 1985, Dr. Chaiken led other local physician leaders to create Health Care Professionals of Howard County, Inc. to help improve health care in the county and still serves as its president and chairman of the board. Dr. Chaiken maintains admitting privileges at Howard County General, where he has previously served as chairman of the medical professional staff, and at St. Agnes Hospital of Baltimore. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery and office-based surgical procedures. Dr. Chaiken was one of the first physicians in the United States to perform hysteroscopy, Essure sterilization and endometrial ablation in the office under local anesthesia. He is also trained and credentialed to perform robotic laparoscopic surgery and has participated on the faculty of numerous physician education programs, teaching other gynecologists the techniques of office hysteroscopy, and minimally invasive surgery, including vaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomy.
