Exercise” Alternatives”

The final blog is our Lifestyle Series focuses on exercise… a word that sometimes gets a bum rap. Exercise doesn’t mean you need to join a gym. It simply means getting up and getting active.

The Benefits of Exercise

Most people begin an exercise routine to get in shape and/or lose weight. There are so many other reasons – both physical and psychological – to get moving. Exercise helps:

  • Reduce stress, depression, and anxiety
  • Boost immunity, thus reducing disease and illness
  • Enhance your body image and self confidence
  • Strengthen bones
  • Lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease
  • Energize your sex life
  • Prevent degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s
  • Increase productivity, creativity, and overall brain function
  • Improve your ability to fall (and stay) asleep

“Exercise” Alternatives

If going to the gym is not your thing, get creative with your workout. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity per day, outdoors (if possible) so you can reap the added benefits of fresh air and Vitamin D. Ways to exercise outside the gym include:

  • Going for a bike ride
  • Taking your dog for a brisk walk
  • Hitting the trails for a scenic hike
  • Playing with your child(ren) or pet(s)
  • Taking a dance class or other group class
  • Joining a recreational soccer or flag football team
  • Grabbing a racket and a partner for some tennis
  • Going for a refreshing swim
  • Playing a round of golf
  • Creating your own boot camp with circuits (jumping jacks, lunges, jump rope, etc.)

A nice complement to exercise is relaxation through yoga, Pilates, or meditation. We recommend checking with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Feel free to Contact your Capital Women’s Care provider with questions about overall health and wellness.
