Is it Anxiety, Depression, or Both?

Although anxiety and depression are separate disorders, the two share similar symptoms. In fact, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, “Nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.” But what is the difference?

Anxiety is the persistent and unrealistic concern about everyday occurrences. While it’s perfectly normal to be concerned about money, health, family, and work, people with anxiety experience this worry excessively.

Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety

  • Muscle tension
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability and edginess
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort or diarrhea

Depression is the persistent feeling of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness. Those experiencing depression have a “glass is half empty” attitude.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Decreased energy and appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping
  • Feeling like a failure or that you’ve let people down
  • Suicidal thoughts

Women can suffer from postpartum depression, which is more severe than the “baby blues” that a majority of women experience after giving birth. Doctors believe that one of the causes of postpartum depression is the rapid decrease in hormones after delivering your baby.

The good news is that both depression and anxiety are treatable through counseling, exercise, relaxation techniques, and medication. Be sure to discuss symptoms of depression and/or anxiety with your Capital Women’s Care provider.
