Menopause is a natural occurrence when a woman’s body stops producing estrogen. Although it is different for every woman, menopause typically occurs between ages 40 and 55 or can occur sooner if the woman has had both ovaries removed.
How do you know if you’re going through menopause? You may notice some changes in your period, hot flashes, and heightened emotions, among other symptoms. Fortunately, most of the symptoms can be managed with medication or/and lifestyle adjustments.
Hormone Therapy
Hormone Therapy (also known as Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT) is used to relieve symptoms of menopause. Through either an estrogen-only or estrogen/progestine combination, HRT can also help protect against bone loss and potentially reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.
As with every treatment, there are benefits and risks. In clinical trials, combination HRT showed an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and breast cancer. Women who experience moderate to severe hot flashes, have lost bone mass, or experienced premature menopause are good candidates for HRT.
Alternative Treatments
While HRT may be the best option for some women, other may reduce their symptoms with some simple lifestyle changes, including:
- Eating a balanced diet with low-fat, low-cholesterol foods
- Increasing calcium intake
- Exercising regularly
