Irregular Menstrual Cycles

In a normal menstrual cycle, a woman will have her period every 24 to 31 days. During the four to seven day period, she will lose between four and 12 tablespoons. However, many women have irregular periods or miss them completely. This can be caused by chronic medical conditions or even emotional circumstances.

One cause of irregular menstrual cycles is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a common genetic condition caused by abnormal hormone levels. Diagnosis and treatment can help reduce the chance of long-term complications, like heart disease or diabetes. While there is no cure for PCOS, the symptoms (including acne, obesity, excess facial and body hair, and irregular periods) can be treated and changes in lifestyle can help relieve the symptoms.
