Hepatitis

World Hepatitis Day is July 28, making this the perfect time to educate yourself about the disease. What exactly is Hepatitis? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe it as “a major global health threat all types of viral hepatitis can cause inflammation of the liver; however, Hepatitis B and C infection can result in a lifelong, chronic infection.”

Hepatitis can be spread many ways:

  • Hepatitis A through food or water contaminated with fecal matter
  • Hepatitis B and C through sexual contact, sharing needles, or from mother to baby during birth

The best way to protect yourself from contracting Hepatitis is to avoid risky behavior, including unprotected sex and needle sharing. Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B are recommended for children and those traveling to certain countries. Learn more about Hepatitis and reducing your risk by visiting the CDC website.
