In a previous blog, we discussed learning to live with menopause, a natural change for woman over age 50. But what happens when you begin experiencing menopause sooner?
Many of the symptoms are the same as those of “regular” menopause, such as irregular or missed periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, bladder issues, and emotional changes.
If you are under the age of 45, you may experience early menopause due to:
- Medical procedures, such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical removal of the ovaries
- An autoimmune, chromosomal, or metabolic disorder
- Family history of early menopause
- Smoking
If you suspect you have entered early menopause, your physician will run tests to rule out other conditions. He or she may conduct a blood test to measure the level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which causes estrogen production in your ovaries, to determine if your levels are within the menopause range.
We encourage all patients to contact their Capital Women’s Care provider when changes occur with their menstrual cycle or with any health related questions/concerns.
