Women of childbearing age often experience discomfort due to gynecologic causes. Two of the most common causes are ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids.
Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacs that can vary in size. Cysts form due to normal changes of the menstrual cycle. They are generally normal and cause no symptoms; however, some cysts can rupture, bleed, grow to abnormally large sizes, and even cause the ovary to twist (called a torsion of the ovary) that is associated with pelvic pain and other symptoms.
Uterine fibroids are the most common type of growth found in a woman’s pelvis. They are almost always noncancerous and are made of muscle. They can form on the outside, middle, and inside of the uterus. Depending on their location and size, fibroids can be asymptomatic or cause heavy periods and/or painful periods.
Ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids often are asymptomatic, but when they start to cause problems, your physician can determine if these are present based on your symptoms, an exam, and possibly additional testing such as a pelvic ultrasound. Many different treatment options, including medications and surgery, are available. If you are experiencing any pelvic pain or unusual bleeding, please contact your Capital Women’s Care provider.
