Breastfeeding Basics

During pregnancy, there are so many options to consider What color should we paint the nursery? What is my delivery plan? What pediatrician should we use? Do I want to breastfeed? All of these are very personal choices, especially breastfeeding. The best thing you can do is educate yourself and make a decision that works for you.

The Benefits of Breastfeeding

Colostrum, the thick milk you produce while pregnant and for a few days after the birth, is nutrient-rich and helps the baby’s digestive system develop. As your breast milk “matures”, it provides exactly what your baby needs for growth, while protecting him or her from illness.

Other Benefits

  • Easily available – anywhere, anytime
  • Breast milk costs nothing
  • No bottles or nipples to wash

For moms, breastfeeding can aid in recovery after childbirth by increasing your levels of oxytocin, causing uterine contractions to help your uterus return to its normal size and reduce blood loss. Breastfeeding can also help reduce the risk of certain cancers and Type 2 diabetes. Added bonus: breastfeeding has been found to be an effective form of birth control (with some specific guidelines – talk to you doctor before relying on this method).

The Challenges

Even with the best intentions, breastfeeding isn’t always possible. Some health problems prevent the mother from being able to breastfeed. Some babies are not interested or unable to tolerate breast milk (or milk of any kind). No matter the circumstances, never feel guilty about not breastfeeding. Formula provides all the essential nutrients your baby needs to thrive.
