Boost Your Mental Health

Woman writing down thoughts on paper

National Women’s Health Week is May 13-19, 2018, making this the perfect time to talk about something most women need to work on – boosting their mental health. With responsibilities at work and at home, women often find themselves in a spiral of constantly doing for others. We encourage all women to carve out some “me” time each day to care for their mental well-being and reduce anxiety and depression. Below are some simple ways to focus on your own mental health.

  • Put it in writing. Jotting down your thoughts for the day provides an outlet for your feelings, positive and negative, as well as an instrument for reflection. You can create an achievement or gratitude journal to focus on specific goals.
  • Make time for hobbies. Whether you’re spending time doing something you already love or experimenting with something new, creative expression can help you find peace of mind.
  • Surround yourself with positivity. Build a support system of those who lift you up and return the favor for them. Be mindful of the moment and focus on the positive in your life.
  • Disconnect for a bit. With multiple communication outlets available at the touch of a hand (or swipe of a finger), there are times when we’re too connected. Unplug and take a mental break from emails, notifications, texts, and other distractions. Throw in some yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises for added benefits.
  • Enjoy the sunshine. Spending time outdoors is proven to work wonders for mental health. Some added benefits of sunshine (Vitamin D) are calcium absorption for strong bones and teeth, immune system support, and regulating cell growth.
  • Stay active. Walk, run, lift weights, dance … whatever gets you moving will reduce the stress hormones (cortisol) and increase the “feel good” chemicals (endorphins). While you’re at it, stay hydrated! Water helps fight fatigue, flush out toxins, and increase energy.
