Breast Self-Exam

As we move toward Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, we’d like to share some information that can aid in early detection and treatment.

An important step for early detection is “knowing” your breasts through monthly self-exams. The best time to do a breast self-exam is a few days after your period ends and the breasts are no longer tender or swollen. Even if you’re post-menopausal, self-exams are an important part of your health care routine. Put a post-it note on your calendar. Set a reminder on your phone. Do whatever will help you remember.

Step 1: LOOK
Using a mirror in good lighting, examine your breasts for any changes in appearance. Has the skin become red, irritated, or dimpled? Have the nipples changed or is there unexplained discharge? Any change to the look of your breasts should be noted.

Step 2: FEEL
Breast self-exams can be done while lying and/or standing. Visit our Breast Care page for various techniques and choose what works best for you. Be sure to check your upper chest and underarm areas for lumps, since those areas also have breast tissue. Take note of any new lumps or an existing lump that has grown larger.

If something doesn’t look or feel right to you, contact your Capital Women’s Care provider to schedule an exam. Since some lumps are too small to be felt during your monthly breast self-exam, it’s important to have an annual mammogram as well.
