Urinary Tract Concerns

Lack of bladder control - or urinary incontinence (UI) - refers to an inability to prevent urinary leakage until you can get to a bathroom. This condition affects more than 13 million Americans and is twice as common in women than men.

Urinary incontinence, along with urinary tract infections and voiding difficulties, may be more common in women than men because of the structure of the female urinary tract and the stresses placed on the body during pregnancy and childbirth. It can also be the result of anatomic changes due to age or certain medical conditions.

The doctors at Capital Women's Care provide specialized care for women suffering from urinary tract problems and voiding difficulties. A thorough examination, along with a complete medical history, will help reveal the cause of your urinary tract problems so that an effective treatment plan can be developed. The treatment plan may include medications, in-office procedures, bladder physiotherapy, and surgical techniques.

Potential Causes

Symptoms of Urinary Incontinence

  • Urgency: a strong urge to urinate whether or not the bladder is full
  • Frequency: voiding more often than usual
  • Nocturia: having to void during hours of sleep
  • Dysuria: experiencing pain when voiding
  • Enuresis: bed wetting or leaking urine while sleeping

There are many potential causes of urinary incontinence and voiding difficulties. Most of these causes can be successfully treated.

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Pelvic support problems
  • Urinary tract abnormalities
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Medications

Treatments

There are many options available to treat urinary tract problems. Often treatments are more effective when used in combination. Be sure and talk to your doctor so that a treatment plan can be developed.
