Improving Mental Health

Most women experience stress – either self-induced or from external sources. Others experience anxiety and depression, some seasonal and some constantly. Regardless of the circumstances, here are some suggestions to help improve your mental health:

Take care of yourself. Eat nutritious meals that include fresh fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, and get active. Being active does not mean adhering to a strict exercise regimen. Click here for some active ideas without having to visit the gym.

Enjoy the outdoors. Fresh air and sunshine will immediately improve your mood and health. Vitamin D from the sun has been shown to ease the symptoms of depression. Breathing in fresh air increases the oxygen in your system, which provides greater energy and improved clarity.

Take time to relax. Turn off your laptop and phone. Read a book. Meditate or do yoga. Watch your favorite TV program. Take a warm bubble bath. Listen to calming music. Set aside time each day for whatever helps you relax and decompress.

Get plenty of sleep. Speaking of relaxation, sleep is such an important part of recharging your batteries. To help improve your sleep, create a bedtime routine that consists of activities that relax you – dim the lights, read a book, and get comfortable.

Ask for help. Talk to a trusted friend or family member about your mental state. A professional counselor can help if there are deeper issues or if medication is needed. Remember – it’s not as simple as “mind over matter”. Mental health issues can be caused by abnormal pathways in your brain.

Making some minor lifestyle changes can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and increase overall mental health. You should discuss any mental health issues with your Capital Women’s Care provider, who can make recommendations and connect you with other resources.
